IRVING, Texas – Dallas College North Lake's volleyball team swept Dallas College Cedar Valley Monday to complete the first half of Dallas Athletic Conference action. The Blazers won 25-16, 25-10, 25-16.
North Lake moved within a match of .500 after improving to 10-11 overall, 3-2 in the DAC.
The Blazers hit .283 – their second highest attack percentage of the season. North Lake hit .371 in the third set, putting down 16 kills with three errors in 35 attempts.
Sandy Cortes and Cameron Brouhard each had 12 kills. Cortes hit .300, and had 16 digs, two aces and three blocks. Brouhard hit .290. Katie Lloyd had 23 assists, 13 digs, an ace and five kills. Brenna Casler hit .375, and had seven kills and four blocks. Ava Mendez had 31 digs.
Cedar Valley's Morgan Taylor had two straight aces to pull the Suns (3-19, 1-4 DAC) within a point before they scored the next two to take a 13-12 lead. Brouhard banged two kills to give the Blazers a 15-13 lead. Cortes' ace and a kill made it 18-13 to cap a 6-0 run.
Kynlee Rion had a kill to extend the lead to 20-14. Rion and Lloyd combined on a block to make it 23-16. Lloyd finished off the set with a kill.
North Lake had 16 kills and four errors for a .279 attack percentage in Set 1.
Casler's block gave North Lake an 11-6 lead in the second set. Cortes extended the lead to 15-7 with a kill. Lloyd and Rion had back-to-back kills to make it 20-9. Cedar Valley's Ava Gurganus' kill stopped the North Lake run. But Rion had a block, and Lloyd finished off the second set with a kill.
Gurganus put the Suns up 6-4 in the third set with a kill. Taylor's kill pushed the lead to 8-5. Taliyah Johnson and Trinity Foy's block made it 9-6. North Lake ran off four straight points, with Casler's kill giving the Blazers a 10-9 lead.
Casler and Cortes combined on a block that started an eight-point North Lake surge. Pearson had a kill during the run that put the Blazers ahead 17-10. Cortes had three kills during the run, including a cross-court winner that made it 21-10. Gurganus had a kill and a tap at the net as Cedar Valley cut the gap to 22-14. Casler and Rion put away kills to move North Lake within match point before Gracie Garcia's ace gave Cedar Valley the next serve. But Brouhard ended it with a kill.
North Lake will host Dallas College Mountain View 6 p.m. Thursday to begin the second half of DAC play.
