Blazers Take Down No. 1 Richland to End Regular Season
DALLAS – Ninth-ranked Dallas College North Lake beat No. 1 Dallas College Richland 71-61 Saturday to end the regular season.
The Blazers (19-10, 11-4 Dallas Athletic Conference) finished third in the league. North Lake enters the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District Tournament as the No. 3 seed, and will host sixth-seeded Dallas College Mountain View (6-23) in the quarterfinals 5 p.m. Wednesday.
North Lake's win over Richland was its second against a Top 10 opponent this season.
Zach Thompson scored 17 points, and had a season-high six steals, four assists and four rebounds. Blazers teammate Santana Spivey had 11 points and four rebounds off the bench. Romiel Carter had 10 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal off the bench. Thompson connected on six of eight field goals. Zaedyn Owens had eight points.
DJ Willis finished with 15 points, and Sean Edmondson 12 points and eight rebounds for Richland (20-8, 13-2). Joubron Bebe had eight points.
The Thunderducks had a one-point lead at halftime, but the Blazers outscored them 40-29 in the second half.
North Lake shot 47.3 percent from the floor, while Richland hit just 28.8 percent of its field goal attempts. Both teams had 39 rebounds. The Thunderducks committed 25 turnovers, and the Blazers had 18.
